Overview
The DREL SSR480D is a single-phase DC-to-AC solid state relay: a semiconductor switch replaces mechanical contacts for spark-free, long-life on/off control. A 3-32 VDC control input switches 40 A of 40-480 VAC load. Product photos show two 40 A single-phase models side by side: the white SSR480D (load 40-480 VAC, control 3-32 VDC) and the black SSR-4800D40 (load 480 VAC, control 3-32 VDC).
Construction
The housing is flame-retardant engineering plastic (the product sheet lists ABS, UL94 V-0 class as examples) with high strength, corrosion resistance and good insulation. Output terminals are nickel/tin-plated metal screw terminals with a transparent protective cover. A metal baseplate (aluminum or copper) exports heat to the heatsink, and the internals are epoxy-resin potted against moisture and vibration for harsh industrial sites.
Typical Applications
Heating control with PID temperature instruments: electric heating wires and heater tubes on injection molding machines, ovens and furnaces. Motor and lighting duty: small AC motors, stage and signal lighting with frequent switching. Automation systems: the relay acts as the PLC output element, letting a weak DC signal drive high-power AC loads. It also fits dust-laden, damp or corrosive environments where contact arcing from mechanical relays is unsafe.
Installation Cautions
At 40 A the relay generates substantial heat: mount it on a metal heatsink with thermal grease or it will burn out. Never short the output; for inductive loads such as motors, add an RC snubber or varistor across the output to absorb surges. The input is polarized - connect + to the control signal positive and - to negative, and wire the AC load to the output side. Contact us for model selection and quotations.
